All eyes are on the police to restore security. If the multinational force ever arrives, it will support the Haitian National Police (PNH) in their fight against gangs. Alongside international aid, the Haitian state is investing significant sums in equipping the police force. Given the overwhelming power of gangs both in Port-au-Prince and certain provincial towns, the focus on the PNH is understandable, especially since the success of the transition largely depends on the police's ability to dismantle or contain these gangs.
While relying on the police to bring peace back to the streets is essential, their efforts won't be sustainable if the justice system is neglected. It's astonishing that the Haitian authorities have chosen to weaken the judiciary. This decision is costing the country dearly today.
