Recent events over the weekend and a tweet from former senator Jean Renel Sénatus, claiming a "massacre was being prepared on Sunday evening against the people of Fonds-Parisien," have heightened fears, according to a Ganthier resident now in Fonds-Parisien, speaking on Monday, August 5, 2024. "Over the weekend, the bandits welded metal bars horizontally across the Bonnette Bridge, blocking access to Ganthier, Fonds-Parisien, Malpasse, and part of the southeast. They set fire to the customs office and an armored vehicle from the National Police of Haiti (PNH). The PNH's deployment is insufficient, and the reinforcement from a few soldiers is almost negligible. The local militia, alongside the PNH, had been resisting the bandits but has since withdrawn," he reported, visibly agitated.

Nine armored vehicles and nearly a hundred police officers and Kenyans came to Ganthier after the destruction of the police station but left without regaining control of the city, he said, still fuming. The bandits, numerous and emboldened, spent hours welding these bars on the Bonnette Bridge. The population is now even more vulnerable than before, continued this Ganthier resident.
