During his visit to Haiti on Thursday, September 5, Blinken revealed that the Biden administration is actively collaborating with Congress for a "rapid reauthorization" of the HOPE/HELP Act. This announcement comes ahead of an event scheduled for September 10 at the IDB in Washington, where companies, factories, and stakeholders will be urged to remain patient as Haiti tackles its security challenges, Le Nouvelliste learned on Friday, September 6, 2024.

"We are particularly focused on strengthening the garment sector, which represents a quarter of Haiti’s GDP, accounts for 90% of its exports, and employs tens of thousands of Haitians. The U.S. HOPE/HELP trade preference program is a key part of this effort because it incentivizes businesses to set up factories here by allowing duty-free exports of garments made in Haiti to the U.S. This critical legislation expires next year, which is why we are working with our Congress for its swift reauthorization," Blinken said.
