“We discussed Haiti and the challenges we face. Our aim is to try to normalize relations if possible, but always with a focus on and concern for the security of the Dominican Republic. Our priority as a government is the safety of the Dominican people, which has been affected in terms of security,” said President Abinader, noting that he had warned the international community about the deteriorating security situation in Haiti since 2021.

“Insofar as they [Haiti] can continue to advance with their security and stability, we will move forward with normalizing our relations, including reopening our airspace for flights, which we discussed in our meeting [with Antony Blinken],” Abinader emphasized, adding that his country has shown “empathy” towards Haiti.
