United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed his frustration over the insufficient funds for the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSSM) in Haiti, despite backing efforts to send a peacekeeping force to the country. During a press conference on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, Guterres did not hold back in criticizing the lack of financial commitment to the mission.

"What is desirable is for countries to take responsibility for properly funding the ongoing operation. I must say that for me, it is absolutely incomprehensible when I am told there is no money," said Guterres, highlighting that Haiti is enduring "a prolonged human tragedy with a well-known history and a great deal of responsibility spanning decades, even over a century or two."
