"We received 23 injured and five people who were already deceased upon arrival," stated Dr. Frantz Alexis, Medical Director of Saint-Nicolas Hospital, in an interview with Le Nouvelliste on Monday, October 7, 2024. Twenty-one of the injured arrived on the first day, October 3, and two more on October 4. According to Dr. Alexis, three surgeons, two orthopedists, and family medicine residents, among others, have been on call continuously to respond to the influx of patients.

Even before this tragic event, Saint-Nicolas Hospital was struggling due to escalating violence in Lower Artibonite. Many healthcare centers in areas controlled by the Gran Grif gang in Savien have shut down, with healthcare professionals fleeing the area. For at least the past nine months, Saint-Nicolas Hospital has often had to handle victims from gang attacks alone.
