Haiti’s ambassador to the UN, Antonio Rodrigue, stated that the situation in the country “has significantly deteriorated” since November, with armed gangs becoming “more violent and more audacious,” subjecting the population to “constant fear.” Rodrigue made these remarks while calling on the UN Security Council to transform the Multinational Security Assistance Mission (MSS) into a peacekeeping mission during an information session requested by China and Russia on Wednesday, November 20, 2024.

“I urge Security Council members to respond favorably to my country’s request to transform the MSS into a peacekeeping mission for the sake of Haiti and regional stability,” Rodrigue stated. He emphasized that this step is necessary to save lives and bring hope to an entire nation, warning that allowing Haiti to collapse would have far-reaching consequences beyond its borders.
