This Friday, a statement from the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission was necessary to refute claims that Kenyan police officers had resigned due to delays in the payment of their allowances. In this statement, MSS Force Commander Godfrey Otunge affirms—or reaffirms—the determination of his troops to support the Haitian National Police (HNP) in conducting decisive operations aimed at dismantling gangs. Should this communication from the MSS be welcomed?

In response to Haitian criticism regarding the MSS’s actual contribution to the fight against insecurity in Haiti, mission officials have become more communicative. Alongside statements, short videos showing Kenyan police officers in operations alongside Haitian police and military forces are being shared. It is a good strategy for the MSS to reassure the Haitian population that it stands with them during these difficult times. However, this communication strategy alone is insufficient to convince Haitians that the international community truly cares about their plight.
