The Trump administration, through the Department of Homeland Security, has announced the termination of TPS for Haitians as of August 3, 2025. "Today, Secretary of State Noem has overturned a decision by the previous administration that sought to extend Haiti's Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for 18 months. As part of this decision, Haiti’s TPS will end on August 3, 2025, unless it is extended," reads a statement released on Thursday, February 20, 2025.

"This is part of President Trump’s promise to reverse policies that acted as magnets for illegal immigration and were inconsistent with the law. TPS is a type of immigration status available to nationals of certain designated countries that allows foreigners, even those who entered the country illegally, to reside temporarily in the United States. The Secretary of Homeland Security has the authority to designate a foreign country for TPS if there is an ongoing armed conflict, an environmental disaster, or extraordinary and temporary conditions," the statement explained.
