"DG, they set the radio on fire," a voice can be heard saying in a video that went viral on social media on the morning of Thursday, March 13, 2025. The 27-second video shows the façade of the RTVC building, blackened by flames. "I shouldn’t even be standing here to record this video. I don’t know where they’re hiding now—they could shoot me," the videographer says in a somber voice, as smoke can be seen billowing from the building of Haiti’s oldest radio station, which will mark its 76th anniversary in June 2025.
The fire was confirmed later in the morning by journalists from the station during the broadcast of Premye Okazyon. "This is terrible news for RTVC, as armed criminals have set fire to the radio station’s premises. The footage we reviewed shows flames ravaging the building," confirmed Guerrier Dieuseul, news director and journalist at RTVC.
