Since the beginning of January, Médecins Sans Frontières has observed an increase in cholera cases, according to Vasseur. "The majority of patients come from Cité Soleil. We are receiving five patients per day. In the past ten days, we have recorded around 70 cases, and given the situation— the increase in the number of displaced persons, the numerous access difficulties we face, as well as those encountered by our partners— we fear a resurgence and a peak of the epidemic."
Faced with this situation, Vasseur expresses concern, as all the conditions for a worsening crisis are in place: lack of potable water, absence of adequate infrastructure, etc. According to him, cholera has never truly disappeared in Haiti, despite a decline in cases between 2018 and 2022. "The major problems that we and other health institutions are facing are access difficulties and the lack of infrastructure," he added.
