For several decades now, Arnold Antonin has been building a body of cinematographic work that is both powerful and meaningful. In Haiti and elsewhere around the world, many of us have developed a passionate attachment to his work, through a cinematic language that elevates contemporary history to a place of honor.
In the 1980s, many people did not fully understand the proposals made by filmmaker Antonin. Because in their minds: cinema is just cinema. That is, a blend of image manipulation techniques and imagination. As if a filmmaker had no right to revisit history without rewriting it with their own legends. As if cinema were not one of the most beautiful tools to shine a spotlight on reality and on people's contributions to either the destruction or the construction of our societies.
