Born Joseph Jacques in Gonaïves on May 25, 1936, Joe Jack leaves behind a rich musical legacy and a personal story shaped by exceptional resilience. Nicknamed "the one-man band" or "the blind man with a thousand destinies," this iconic artist of the 70s and 80s succeeded in transcending his disability to become one of the most beloved voices on the Haitian music scene.
Joe Jack’s life began in pain. Diagnosed as blind at the age of one, the young Joseph Jacques grew up in a society where superstitions fueled rumors about his disability. His mother, Rose-Irène Georges, then only 18 years old, was believed — according to popular beliefs of the time — to have been cursed for having washed the body of a deceased cousin the day before giving birth.
