The Transitional Presidential Council has just marked the first anniversary of its rise to power. A date that the CPT and the organizations that appointed its members chose not to celebrate. It seems that no one wants—or is willing—to take responsibility for the record of this first year in the post-Jovenel Moïse transitional period.
While the CPT lacked the courage to present its own report card, local and international human rights organizations have done so in its place. The issue of security, which was supposed to be the top priority of the authorities, alone sums up the failure of the CPT’s first year. According to the latest UN report, at least 5,601 people were killed in Haiti by gangs during 2024. One refrains from detailing the UN report and those of other organizations—local or international—that document cases of rape, destruction of public and private property, as well as corruption and abusive exploitation of public resources, which have characterized the CPT’s first year.
