Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen, a member of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, expressed her concerns about the plans to hold the referendum and elections this year under current security conditions, stating that they are no longer realistic. She shared her observations in a letter addressed to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, a copy of which Le Nouvelliste obtained on Monday, May 12, 2025.

"I am also concerned that the current plans for the referendum and elections this year are not realistic given the current security conditions, and are therefore very vulnerable to criminal infiltration. This risks undermining the democratic legitimacy of Haiti's future constitution and future government," wrote the Democratic senator.
