A federal judge in New York will hear oral arguments on Wednesday in a lawsuit challenging the Trump administration’s decision to shorten temporary deportation protections and work permits for more than half a million Haitians, the Miami Herald reported on Wednesday, May 28, 2025.

The case, Haitian Evangelical Clergy Association v. Trump, was filed in March after Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem reversed a Biden administration decision that had extended Haiti’s Temporary Protected Status (TPS) until February 2026. Noem announced that the designation, which allowed 521,000 Haitians to live and work temporarily in the United States, will end on August 3, with no extension.
