The Sunrise case remains, for now, an exception. The government does not plan to provide an irrevocable letter of credit to help other companies cover the high insurance costs due to the level of risk and to enable the return of competition in this sector, Le Nouvelliste learned from a government source on Friday, June 6, 2025.

“There is no support mechanism for companies or businesses. Sunrise is operating normally and is not considered bankrupt, even though it has debts to the tax authorities and other public institutions that provide it with services. Because of the level of risk, insurance companies increased their premiums. Sunrise was not able to bear this financially. To get Sunrise to resume regular flights, the government decided to cover the shortfall through an irrevocable letter of credit issued by a foreign bank,” said the government source, who mentioned the closed nature of the airline industry due to the significant investments required. “The initial investments to start an airline are heavy and substantial. That deters other investors from entering this market. It’s as if there’s a natural barrier in this sector,” the source said.
