While Kathia Verdier, Minister of Haitians Living Abroad (MHAVE), expressed satisfaction on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, regarding the progress made in issuing official documents to Haitians in the diaspora, the gap between official statements and on-the-ground reality remains striking. The minister’s remarks, made during the “Tuesdays of the Nation” program, come amid an ongoing crisis affecting thousands of Haitian nationals facing deportation from the Dominican Republic.
“Of the five thousand pending passport applications at the Haitian embassy in the Dominican Republic, three thousand passports have already been issued. This is an important milestone in the pursuit of civil and administrative rights for Haitians living outside the national territory,” Minister Kathia Verdier stated, according to a press release from the Prime Minister’s Office published after the conference.
