In a statement published on Wednesday, the Episcopal Conference of Haiti (CEH) denounced the atrocities committed by criminal groups against the population and the inaction of the current authorities. The Catholic bishops also took the opportunity to highlight the positive aspects and shortcomings identified in the draft of the new Constitution. Following these observations, the CEH affirmed that “the current moment is not suitable for the process of adopting a new Constitution.”
More and more voices in society are speaking out against the substance of the draft and the illegitimacy of the current authorities to change the Constitution. Although the CEH believes that the priority should be security, peace, and governance for the benefit of the people, it does not entirely reject the draft of the new Constitution.
