Jhonny Célicourt, musician and communications consultant, author of the book DictionnArt, posted the following comment from his @djecee account on X after reading online reactions to a video showing a couple dancing compas in a very close style: “We still have a lot of work to do to promote compas on social media. Many people commenting on this post believe it’s kizomba being played and danced. Even @grok is rambling on about it.”

What Célicourt highlights is simple: whether through cultural appropriation, misunderstanding, or deliberate initiative, the way of dancing compas direct—the famous two bodies moving as one, the very essence of the rhythm—can easily be taken over, renamed, attributed to another music genre, or stripped of its Haitian identity.
