This strike, involving these teachers, is due to the government’s failure to honor its commitments, explained Kenson Délice, coordinator of the Union nationale des normaliens et éducateurs d’Haïti (UNNOEH). “One of the main demands concerns the regularization of the status of numerous teachers who have been working for years without being officially appointed,” he said on Magik 9 radio on Tuesday, October 28, 2025. However, the union leader clarified that this was not a general strike affecting all public schools.

According to the union representative, the Jean-Marie Vincent and Antoine et Georges Izméry high schools are among the institutions currently paralyzed. “Tension has arisen in these schools following the arrival of new teachers who received appointment letters, while several long-serving teachers have yet to be regularized. This situation has created frustration, leading teachers to suspend their activities and prompting students to take to the streets,” he explained, noting that this same issue has been reported in several other high schools in the capital and in certain provincial towns.
