The historic house of Charlotin Marcadieu, located in the city of Dessalines, partially gave way overnight. According to information received by Le Nouvelliste, a large section of the roof collapsed, leaving behind scattered tile debris and weakened walls. On-site observations reveal wooden beams still supporting parts of the yellow-painted exterior walls, while an entire section of the structure has sunk under the weight of time.
Built shortly after Haiti’s independence in 1804, this house belonged to Colonel Charlotin Marcadieu, a loyal companion and trusted aide of Jean-Jacques Dessalines. Like the residence of Claire-Heureuse Félicité, Dessalines’s wife, the building was notable for its traditional layout: three large rooms, a central living area, and a veranda open to the outdoors. A testament to post-revolutionary architecture, the home itself told an important chapter of the nation’s history.
