In Haiti, the risk of diabetes remains very high due to the combination of various factors that contribute to the development of this chronic metabolic disease. Speaking on the program Panel Magik this Wednesday, November 11, 2025, the executive director of the Haitian Foundation for Diabetes and Cardiovascular Diseases (FHADIMAC) highlighted the risks associated with the development of the different types of diabetes, while raising awareness of the behaviors needed to prevent them and, if diagnosed, to face them. Among the types of diabetes mentioned by Dr. Larco was type 5 diabetes, whose development is favored by malnutrition.

“This type of diabetes is linked to malnutrition,” Dr. Larco stated. “We tend to think that diabetes is linked to people who are financially well-off or who eat a lot. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. We have noticed a population that, affected by malnutrition during childhood — notably due to certain types of food that damage the pancreas — develops diabetes quite early in life, between twenty and thirty years old,” she lamented.
