After the inscription of soupe joumou and cassava, it is now Haitian konpa (compas) music that is about to make its entry onto the List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Le Nouvelliste has learned that UNESCO’s technical committee has issued a favorable opinion for the inscription of konpa on the List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, an important step before the final decision expected next month.

In a statement released Wednesday, UNESCO announced that the 20th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage will be held in New Delhi (India) from December 8 to 13, with an opening event on December 7. The committee will examine new nominations for inscription on the Convention’s Lists, as well as the state of safeguarding of already-inscribed practices and the possible extension of some to other State Parties.
