The La Paix University Hospital is among the few public hospitals still functioning in the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince. Since February 2024, demand across all its services has doubled. A new management model implemented by the current leadership, along with financial support from partners such as PAHO/WHO, has enabled the hospital to stay afloat. During a visit conducted on December 5, Le Nouvelliste observed a clean, air-conditioned hospital where patients—though very numerous—are being cared for.
Classified as a level 3 university hospital, La Paix Hospital offers the full range of specialized services operating 24 hours a day. In an interview with Le Nouvelliste, hospital officials presented figures illustrating both the rise in demand and the institution’s response capacity. “Between 2022 and 2025, the number of admissions doubled. In the emergency department, we went from 800 patients per month to around 1,800. The operating room increased from 150 procedures per month to 320. In maternity, we record an average of 150 cesarean sections per month and 270 vaginal deliveries. And the outpatient clinic receives nearly 300 patients per day and also operates on Saturdays,” explained a hospital official.
