January 26, 2026. The Conseil présidentiel de transition (CPT) is living its final days. The Council has failed lamentably. None of the objectives set out in the April 3 agreement has been achieved. The CPT wallowed in the mire of schemes, associated itself with anachronistic and dangerously anti-democratic initiatives such as the stillborn project for a new draft Constitution, and the decrees on the High Court of Justice and on defamation. One sanctuarizes corruption; the other muzzles dissent in Haiti, where there is no implementing law on access to information.
To cap it all, the CPT counts three members sanctioned by the United States Government. They are accused of collusion with gangs designated as terrorist organizations by Washington. In addition to Fritz Alphonse Jean and two advisers whose names have not been made public, there are indications that further sanctions will follow. And three of its members are named in a corruption case.
