The National Airport Authority (AAN) has officially announced plans to build a modern airport in Port-à-L’écu, in the Nord-Ouest department. According to officials, this announcement is the culmination of a consultation process marked by several technical meetings and field visits carried out by AAN officials at the initiative of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Nord-Ouest (CCINO). According to AAN Director General Yves Ducarmel François, in-depth studies were finalized following these exchanges. The choice of the Port-à-L’écu site, he said, is based on a logic of regional connectivity and opening up the area, with the aim of offering a modern alternative to existing infrastructure.
According to geographic data provided by the CCINO, the future airport site is strategically located to serve the department. It is approximately 22.1 km from Port-de-Paix, 17 km from Jean-Rabel, 28 km from Bassin Bleu, 57 km from Môle Saint-Nicolas, and 62 km from Gonaïves. This location will make it possible to serve a broad urban network that also includes the municipalities of Saint-Louis du Nord, Anse-à-Foleur, Latortue, Chansolme, Gros-Morne, Bombarde, Baie-de-Henne, and Anse-Rouge. For the Chamber of Commerce, the construction of this airport will have a considerable impact on cross-cutting economic activities such as trade, transportation, and tourism, serving as a catalyst for genuine development across the country.
