In front of the Guatemalan crowd, the Haitian side struggled but secured the only ticket from Group C of the Concacaf qualifiers. Haiti opened the scoring after just seven minutes of play through Sonson Jean-Baptiste, who headed the ball in following a corner kick taken from the right side of the Guatemalan defense. This early goal allowed the Grenadiers to fully commit themselves to the pursuit of victory. Four minutes later, the host team equalized through Patrick Arana, who also scored with a header (1–1). Haiti regained the lead in the 22nd minute thanks to Danrick Dalcé, who placed a shot inside the penalty area, leaving the goalkeeper with little chance to react. The first half ended with the Haitians holding the advantage.
After the break, Guatemala made adjustments in an effort to find the equalizing goal. However, the second half turned into a rather disjointed match, with fouls multiplying on both sides. In the 77th minute, Haiti had the opportunity to score a third goal, but Miguel Joseph’s shot went wide. In the 81st minute, Guatemala earned a free kick from about 25 meters out. From that play, Anteriano’s header went wide of Clifford Gené’s goal.
