After the neighborhoods of lower Delmas and downtown Port-au-Prince, the country is beginning to grasp the extent of the damage caused by gangs on Avenue Christophe and its surroundings. Short videos shared by law enforcement show a neighborhood that is unrecognizable. Partially destroyed or burned buildings are among the first observations drawn from the images circulated.
The police were able to enter the Faculty of Human Sciences, one of the emblematic institutions of Avenue Christophe. It is not yet known what remains inside. It is too early to assess the full extent of the damage caused by gangs in the area. It is evident that the damage will in no way be comparable to that of the January 12, 2010 earthquake. It should be recalled that this area is home to numerous university centers, traditional schools, and private institutions of all kinds.
