The United States House of Representatives approved on Thursday legislation aimed at extending protections against deportation for Haitian immigrants, with the support of Republican members of Congress. This decision marks a significant victory for advocates of these measures, while leaving uncertainty over the future of the bill in the Senate, Miami Herald reported.

The text, backed by House Democrats and which would protect up to 350,000 Haitians from deportation, has now been sent to the Senate, where its adoption is expected to be difficult. Even if it is passed there, it will still need to be approved by President Donald Trump, who has moved to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti and has asked the Supreme Court to allow him to terminate it, even as legal proceedings continue in lower courts.
