The Security Council reviewed the situation in Haiti in light of political progress and ongoing security challenges. The Special Representative of the Secretary-General welcomed electoral progress while warning of persistent insecurity. “Haiti is at a turning point, where political and institutional progress is laying the foundations for a credible path forward,” stated the Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Haiti, Carlos Ruiz Massieu, during this meeting of the United Nations Security Council, which was attended by Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé.
Mr. Massieu emphasized that Haitian stakeholders are categorical: elections remain the only legitimate path to restoring constitutional order. The recent completion of the registration of political parties—a first since 2016—constitutes a decisive step, he noted, also welcoming the ongoing update of the electoral legal framework. Other crucial steps, such as the revision and approval of the electoral budget, require immediate attention, he added.
