The highly brilliant and renowned mathematics professor Bernard Brousseau was seriously wounded by gunfire on Sunday, May 10, 2026, during clashes between armed gangs in the Plaine du Cul-de-Sac. The news was confirmed to Le Nouvelliste by his wife, Nancy Cyprien Brousseau, who stated that her husband was in surgery in critical condition early Sunday evening. He had been struck by several bullets, including one in the chest and another near his heart, Mrs. Brousseau specified. Yesterday morning, Monday, she confirmed that the operation had gone well, and the family remains hopeful that Professor Brousseau will survive this ordeal.
A graduate of the École normale supérieure (ENS), Mr. Brousseau remains an emblematic figure of the Lycée Pierre Eustache Daniel Fignolé, where he has taught since its creation in 1987. His competence, dedication, integrity, and passion for mathematics are recognized by every generation of students he taught. He was my mathematics teacher in philosophy class at Lycée P. E Daniel Fignolé in 1996. In my time, Professor Brousseau never missed a class. Even when teachers’ unions announced strikes, he would arrive five minutes early to teach his lesson. No one could intimidate or discourage him from showing up in the classroom. It was the same during recreational days: he was always present to move forward with his program and ensure that his students would be able to succeed in the mathematics exams during official examinations.
