It is necessary to stop pretending in the face of obvious realities. A spider’s web is being woven to guarantee the preservation of elite impunity, benefiting the powerful figures of both past and present regimes. Faced with this reality, some choose to look away. Others, walled in silence, are facilitating the establishment of a system whose longevity has made Haiti a paradise for the corrupt and a hell for the population being stripped of its resources. The consequences of this plunder are visible in communities where tears and blood flow in abundance.

There are speeches, grand gestures, smokescreens, and other forms of sleight of hand. This system has its architects. There is no longer any room for doubt. The decree on the High Court of Justice, which sanctuarizes corruption, neutralizes the Anti-Corruption Unit (ULCC) and the Central Financial Intelligence Unit (UCREF), and organizes elite impunity for the benefit of senior state officials, is in force. The decree on defamation, which imposes much harsher penalties and further tightens the gag, is also in force. Prime Minister-President Alix Didier Fils-Aimé and his allies who have remained silent are assuming responsibility for it.
