Appearing on the program Panel Magik on the eve of the opening of the 2026 World Cup, Philippe Vorbe reflected on Haiti’s first participation in the world’s biggest football tournament. The former midfielder recounted the behind-the-scenes story of that historic adventure, from the years of preparation to the World Cup in Germany, without overlooking the difficulties faced by that generation of Grenadiers.
A Qualification Built Over Several Years
For Philippe Vorbe, the story of Haiti’s qualification for the 1974 World Cup began several years earlier. According to him, Haitian football underwent a turning point at the end of the 1960s. “The Haitian Football Federation began functioning better both economically and organizationally,” he explained. Indeed, after winning a CONCACAF qualifying tournament in Jamaica, many observers began to believe in the potential of the Haitian national team.
