As part of his visit to Haiti, organized by the State University of Haiti (UEH), writer Dany Laferrière, a member of the Académie française, met with students at the university’s rectorate on Monday, July 13. The discussion, moderated by Darline Alexis and Francesca Mintor, focused on the theme “Dany Laferrière: The Childhood of a Writer.” Journalist and UEH professor Jean Pharès Jérôme served as master of ceremonies.
UEH Rector Dieuseul Prédélus opened the event by announcing new initiatives to support Haitian literature. “I am pleased to announce, on the occasion of this visit, the organization of regular seminars devoted to our literature, as well as a support program for young writers through residencies and university awards,” he said. He placed the event within a broader institutional framework: “This meeting is part of an institutional effort to honor and highlight the great figures who carry Haitian culture beyond our borders.”
