The UN Security Council devoted a meeting on Monday, July 20, to the situation in Haiti, with a view to renewing the Gang Suppression Force (GSF). While several speakers welcomed the progress made in election preparations and the strengthening of security capacities, all emphasized the need to maintain momentum in order to create the conditions for credible elections. The full deployment of the Gang Suppression Force (GSF) and the renewal of its mandate were also presented as priorities.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Minister Raina Forbin presented the progress made in security, governance and election preparations, while calling on the international community to continue supporting stabilization efforts. “Despite the persistent challenges, Haiti is now closer than it has been in years to restoring security and organizing free, credible, inclusive and participatory elections,” the foreign minister said.
