The first round of the general elections is scheduled to take place on December 13, 2026. The unrealistic nature of the calendar drawn up by the CEP is already providing ample grounds for criticism. The electoral institution is swimming against the tide of reality, the security and logistical challenges, and the long history of post-1986 elections, some argue.

There is also discussion of the large number of registered parties and the formation of political party groupings on grounds that are not always clear, in a context where ideological lines and viable political projects commanding lasting political loyalty do not always exist.
