New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani said Monday that he had asked President Donald Trump to restore protected status for Haitians, after City Hall was forced to identify and dismiss municipal employees living in the country under Temporary Protected Status (TPS)—a federal program that has now been terminated, according to an article in the Daily News.
“I spoke with the president and clearly emphasized the critical importance of this issue for our city, our economy and the well-being of all those who consider this city their home,” Mamdani said at a press conference on Monday. “I also reminded him that the president is the only person authorized to extend TPS or grant Deferred Enforced Departure.”
