Responsible for sanitation, each at its own level, the Ministry of Public Works, Transportation and Communications (MTPTC), the Ministry of the Environment (MdE) and the National Solid Waste Management Service (SNGRS) seem to be nowhere to be found.
In the streets of the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area, from Delmas to Pétion-Ville, sites that once served as open-air dumps have been cleaned and repainted. These places, where piles of all kinds of garbage once stood, are now painted green and white. The walls bear the markings “SNGRS,” “MdE,” “Konbit Haïti zéro déchet,” as well as threats of a 25,000-gourde fine for those who persist in dumping waste at these sites.
