Joseph Félix Badio and 17 Colombians incarcerated and charged by Haitian justice in the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse on July 7, 2021, were extradited to the USA on Sunday, September 20, 2026, Le Nouvelliste learned from a government source. "In accordance with the extradition mechanisms provided between the Republic of Haiti and the United States of America, and at the request of the American authorities, the Ministry of Justice and Public Security authorizes, upon instruction from the Government, the handover of the concerned individuals to allow for their trial," stated a communiqué from the Ministry of Justice and Public Security. "This action also aims to contribute to the establishment of the facts and the identification of responsibilities while respecting judicial guarantees and shielding from any influence," the communiqué continued. According to the communiqué from the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, "in an effort to advance the judicial procedures related to the assassination of President Jovenel MOÏSE, which occurred on the night of July 6 to 7, 2021, the Haitian Government has decided to strengthen its cooperation with American judicial authorities." "Two procedures have been initiated, one in Haiti and the other in the United States. While the American procedure has seen significant progress, notably arrests, prosecutions, and convictions, the Haitian procedure remains faced with significant difficulties and has, to date, not led to a trial after five years of proceedings," the communiqué reads. Several individuals held in Haiti are subject to charges or warrants issued by American judicial authorities in connection with this case. Furthermore, the information and evidence that may be collected during this cooperation could also contribute to the deepening of investigations in Haiti, in accordance with the mechanisms provided for in terms of mutual legal assistance, as stated in this communiqué. This decision is in line with the respect for the prerogatives and interests of the Republic of Haiti and reflects the Government's willingness to mobilize available cooperation avenues to promote the outcome of the trial. The Government reaffirms its determination that justice be rendered to President Jovenel Moïse, his family, and the Haitian people, asserts the communiqué from the Ministry of Justice and Public Security.
