The Sigueneau Sanatorium Hospital is the only specialized center for tuberculosis treatment in the Grand Sud.

An institution as critical for public health in Haiti cannot be treated as a poor relation. It is absurd.

The healthcare and administrative staff are working under extremely miserable conditions.

300 × 250

Patients with tuberculosis and people living with HIV are in very great difficulty. For several years now, the hospital has not only been managing tuberculosis. Due to the co-morbidity between HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis, the center is also obliged to care for people living with HIV. Nonetheless, the Sigueneau Sanatorium in Léogâne is in a state of neglect, abandonment, and contempt by the MSPP.

Moreover, due to insecurity, the Port-au-Prince Sanatorium, the GHESKIO Center, and the General Hospital are closed. Demand has increased significantly at the Sigueneau Sanatorium in Léogâne, which unfortunately is unable to meet the healthcare needs of tuberculosis patients and people living with HIV.

The hospitalization wards are in very poor condition

Essential medical equipment is not available. The laboratory service lacks everything. Doctors, nurses, and medical technologists struggle to work.

In cases of death, the Sigueneau Sanatorium does not have the necessary means to keep bodies for more than 24 hours, often leaving corpses abandoned there. It should not be forgotten that the Sigueneau Sanatorium regularly receives the most needy and vulnerable patients.

To address the needs of the population, the protesters make the following recommendations:

- Rehabilitation of the main buildings of the Sigueneau Sanatorium;

- Repair and increase medical equipment;

- Improvement of the environment around the Sanatorium;

- Increase and appointment of staff;

- Implementation of a larger capacity solar energy system;

- Establishment of a follow-up mechanism between the MSPP and the Sigueneau Sanatorium;

- Acquisition of an ambulance for the transport and transfer of patients;

- Construction of a morgue or a mortuary storage system;

- Establishment of an adequate support fund for the operation of the Sigueneau Sanatorium in Léogâne;

- Establishment of a stock of essential medicines and supplies for the treatment of tuberculosis patients and people living with HIV.

Therefore, the Sigueneau Sanatorium in Léogâne is too important to the public health system of the Grand Sud to be treated as a poor relative.

This clearly reflects the poor governance of the public health system in Haiti.
