After a screening at the Club-ciné de Vandredi Dekontrakte of the Haitian Network of Health Journalists (RHJS), Picard Emmanuel Desravines shared his impressions on "The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind." This feature film, released in 2019 and directed by British-Nigerian actor Chiwetel Ejiofor, sparked reflections at the RHJS.
About thirty people participated on October 9, 2026, in the screening of the film The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, organized at the Haitian Network of Health Journalists (RHJS) in Delmas 48. Inspired by the true story of William Kamkwamba, a young Malawian who undertakes to build a wind turbine to cope with the drought in his village, the film offers the audience a narrative where learning becomes a means to act on a community's living conditions.
From a family facing poverty, William seeks a solution to the crisis threatening their livelihoods. Despite the challenges of accessing education and the lack of material resources, he mobilizes his knowledge to design a wind turbine. His project, initially met with skepticism, gradually takes shape and demonstrates the role that individual initiatives can play in finding answers to collective problems.
A story that resonates with young people
The journey of William Kamkwamba highlights the role of education, curiosity, and creativity in realizing a project. By transforming what he learns into a concrete solution, the young Malawian illustrates the importance of having access to knowledge and opportunities to practice his skills.
The film thus invites reflection on the opportunities available to young people to develop their potential, even in environments marked by precariousness. It also reminds us that material difficulties can limit initiatives without necessarily erasing the ability to imagine responses adapted to the needs of one’s community.
