In Lalue, one of the places we visited around 10 a.m., several flower vendors were sitting at their spots. The flowers displayed were fewer compared to previous years. The cause is the difficulties related to insecurity in Kenscoff, one of the supply areas for merchants. Despite relying on suppliers from the Dominican Republic, the quantity of flowers available in the market remains low, according to the vendors we interviewed.
Ricky has been selling flowers since the earthquake of January 12, 2010. In his early days, he grew them in his garden in Kenscoff before selling them at Place Saint-Pierre and then in Lalue. At that time, local producers could supply the market in large quantities, particularly with pompons, daisies, and astromelias. However, the degradation of the security situation, marked notably by the presence of armed men in Furcy, has disrupted this activity. "The bandits have taken the areas where we grew our flowers," Ricky explains.
