The departmental directorate of the Ministry of Women's Affairs and Women's Rights (MCFDF) in the South organized, on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, in the city of Cayes, an awareness and mobilization meeting on women's political and electoral participation. The activity brought together representatives of women's organizations and women leaders around the necessity to strengthen their engagement in political life, with the upcoming elections approaching.

During the activity, the Minister of Women's Affairs and Women's Rights, Pédrica Saint-Jean, emphasized the need to encourage more women to participate in the electoral process, particularly by joining political parties and running for elected positions.

According to figures presented by Pédrica Saint-Jean, women candidates represent about 4% of deputies and 6% of senators. According to her, no woman is a candidate for the presidential position, while their representation in local authorities is estimated between 33% and 34%.

In light of this situation, the minister called on church leaders, market leaders, universities, vocational schools, and community leaders to encourage women to engage in political life. She believes that women leaders should be supported and encouraged to integrate into political structures to better participate in decisions that guide the country's future.

"Many women leaders are capable of assuming these responsibilities. We must reach out to them and convince them to participate in political life," said the ministry representative.

For Linda Carrié, the departmental director of MCFDF in the South, the presence of women in decision-making spaces is essential for the functioning of an inclusive democracy. "We cannot build a strong, just, and inclusive democracy without women," she stated.

She reminded that women play an important role in the economic and social life of the country. They support families, participate in community activities, and contribute to the development of their localities. According to her, this contribution must also be reflected in their participation in managing public affairs.

"Voting is a fundamental right, but women's participation should not be limited to voting. We must also encourage more women to run for office, to advocate for their ideas, to make their voices heard, and to access elected positions," she added.

The meeting organized in Cayes was also intended to allow participants to share their experiences, identify difficulties faced in their communities, and seek solutions to strengthen their political participation.

For Linda Carrié, awareness initiatives must lead to concrete commitments. She reiterated the departmental directorate's availability to collaborate with women's organizations, public institutions, and other concerned actors to facilitate their participation in political life. "We must not stop at raising awareness. We need to move from awareness to commitment, and then from commitment to action," she declared.

This meeting is part of a week of activities organized by the Ministry of Women's Affairs and Women's Rights in the South department. In addition to mobilizing around political and electoral participation, the ministry plans to celebrate International Day of Rural Women on October 15, 2026, and to reinforce the Departmental Gender Table on the afternoon of October 13, 2026.
