A new institution in the realm of law and creation is set to emerge in Haiti: the Haitian Academy of Intellectual Property. Its launch is scheduled for Thursday, October 22, 2026. The establishment of this academy is a response to the fact that "the issue of intellectual property is poorly understood [by creators]," explains Emmelie Prophète, former Minister of Culture and Communication, one of the initiators of this project. As a result, intellectual property rights over these works, trademarks, and creations are underutilized. "The Academy aims to fill these gaps. It will offer training to professionals capable of advising, defending, transmitting, and enforcing intellectual property rights," explains the former minister.
Protecting creators, artisans, and entrepreneurs, modernizing the legal framework, enhancing cultural heritage and Haitian know-how, providing creators with the necessary tools to exploit their works, strengthening the enforcement of rights and laws, and supporting economic development and investment: these are some of the objectives of this project, which aims to be a lever for development. "One prerequisite to demonstrate that the country is open to business is to make the issue of intellectual property rights a concrete matter," asserts Ms. Prophète.
