With six days until the midterm elections in the United States, scheduled for November 3, 2026, the signs seem rather favorable for the Democrats in a race that promises to be tight. A Democratic victory appears to be taking shape, estimates Me Frandley Denis Julien, who predicts that "the victory of the Democrats will be massive." The immigration attorney views this trend positively, especially since the results of the upcoming American elections should lead to some repercussions for the Haitian community in the United States, thousands of members of which have been in turmoil since the inauguration of the current American president, Donald J. Trump.

A victory for the Democrats in both chambers of the American Congress would mean, according to Me Julien, "the end of Trump's presidency." "This means he [Donald Trump] will be there without being there. It will be the Democrats who will lead the country, particularly with regard to immigration," argues the attorney, who believes that such a scenario, signifying a loss of popularity for Trump and his immigration policy, could push some Republican lawmakers, whose support for the current American president is intrinsically linked to his popularity, to reconsider their position on immigration.

The Congress, having among its responsibilities the control of the federal budget, a Democratic victory should also allow them to reduce the budget of the "Immigration and Customs Enforcement" (ICE) – and, by extension, reduce its maneuvering power – or reallocate certain funds made available to ICE, the powerful immigration police responsible for tracking and arresting undocumented immigrants for their deportation. "A good portion of these funds is spent on corruption, with associates of the president enriching themselves through the detention [of immigrants]," claims Me Julien.

The anticipated Democratic victory would be more linked to the electorate's desire to sanction the current administration than to the merits of the Democratic Party. The war with Iran, one of the direct consequences of which is the rise in fuel prices at the pump, would be one of the factors likely to fuel this desire to sanction the current administration. Immigration policy, which particularly affects certain large communities, as well as Americans' purchasing power, will also play a role in voters' choices.

Trump's electoral victories in 2016 and 2024 marked a turning point in American politics. The real estate magnate, heavily criticized for his controversial behavior, is at odds with the values embodied by the American political class. His victories, according to Me Julien, would have been facilitated by the myth surrounding the character, perceived as the only one capable of restoring Americans' economic prosperity, especially in a context of decreasing purchasing power, a subject dear to American voters. And it is this myth that becomes his main weakness today, as the American economy falters, with notably "extraordinary inflation," declining purchasing power, and, with the war in Iran, gasoline prices reaching high levels.
