The Bureau of Human Rights in Haiti (BDHH) and the Organization for the Integral Development of Women in Duchity (ODIFED) are among the civil society organizations working on the ground to prevent and combat physical and sexual violence against women and girls in the Greater South of Haiti. Their projects, funded by the French embassy in Haiti under the Team France Fund (FEF), aim to support victims and raise public awareness.

Thanks to the support of the French embassy, the BDHH offers free legal assistance to victims, notably by representing them in court.

"According to Me Asna Noël, lawyer and head of the Gender-Based Violence (GBV) division at the BDHH, the organization receives an average of three victims per day. These are mainly women and girls facing domestic violence or rape," reports the French embassy in Haiti.

Me Noël also mentions a third category, that of economic victims. "These are women abandoned by their partners with children, while these partners categorically refuse to take care of them," she explains.

For the French ambassador to Haiti, Gautier Lekens, the work of Haitian organizations is "essential." "By being present close to communities, they contribute to advancing women's rights. France supports these local actors and their ability to carry out concrete actions that meet the needs of the population," emphasizes the diplomat.

Preventing and combating violence against women and girls is a priority for the embassy. "For the period 2025-2026, it has funded 28 civil society organizations present in nine of the ten departments of the country, amounting to 800,000 euros through the FEF," reveals the embassy.

As part of its feminist diplomacy, France makes the promotion of women's rights and gender equality a key aspect of its foreign policy. In Haiti, this commitment, according to the embassy, translates into financial support for organizations at the forefront of social struggles.

The supported projects address two strategic priorities of the FEF: the defense of women's rights and economic empowerment in the face of climate challenges.
