Although the Presidential Council had officially announced the formation of the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) for August 28, 2024, as of Wednesday, only three out of nine sectors had submitted names to the CPT without any disputes or duplications. At this time, the Presidential Council is unable to set a date for establishing the electoral institution.
As time passes, the possibility of the Presidential Council organizing elections in the country before February 7, 2026—the date when the CPT's mandate expires—seems increasingly unlikely. More than three months after its installation, the Presidential Council has struggled to gain control of the country and take concrete actions to restore security, and it is also failing to make significant progress toward organizing elections, which are the two primary reasons for its existence.
