The Haitian Embassy in Washington is once again in the spotlight. Currently, the issue is mentioned in hushed tones that "there are problems" and "a scandal" with the money paid by Haitian nationals in Chile to obtain their passports, learned Le Nouvelliste from credible sources in late April 2023. Ambassador of Haiti to Washington, Edmond Bocchit, who was contacted by the newspaper on April 25, has not yet responded to our messages. However, on Tuesday, May 2, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jean Victor Généus, told Le Nouvelliste that Ambassador Edmond Bocchit has been recalled. "Yes," Chancellor Jean Victor Généus replied briefly, sticking to the impossibility, already expressed on April 25, of making statements. "For now, I can't make too many statements. The process is still ongoing," said Chancellor Généus on Tuesday, May 2. "A mission is underway and will soon present its report," Chancellor Généus had responded on April 25, when asked about the existence of an evaluation mission in embassies regarding passport issuances. "Please be patient. The press will be informed," the Chancellor had assured. Le Nouvelliste has learned for several days that this new scandal has made waves at the US State Department, which would have asked Haitian authorities to take appropriate measures.
"I was invited to a consultation meeting. I do not have any recall letter in my possession. A recall letter must be signed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, seen and approved by the Prime Minister. If such a letter exists, it has not yet been handed over," Ambassador Bocchit Edmond told Le Nouvelliste late on Tuesday, May 2, 2023.
