Federal Judge José E. Martínez has sentenced Haitian-Chilean businessman Rodolphe Jaar to life in prison for aiding "a group of Colombian mercenaries in obtaining weapons to assassinate Haitian President Jovenel Moïse in 2021," according to an Associated Press dispatch on Friday, June 2, 2023. The verdict was delivered during a hearing at the federal court in Miami. Mr. Jaar was sentenced to the maximum penalty he faced, despite pleading guilty and committing to cooperate with investigators in hopes of receiving a lighter sentence, according to the dispatch.

The businessman, who was an informant for the U.S. government and had been convicted of drug trafficking ten years ago, is one of eleven individuals arrested and charged in the United States for the murder of Moïse, and the only one to have pleaded guilty. The other ten individuals are scheduled to stand trial before a jury in July, although the date may be postponed. President Jovenel Moïse, 53 years old, was brutally assassinated at his residence on July 7, 2021.
